Aspire Public Schools reveals 2022 breach; Rochester Public Schools dealing with current attack

Posted on April 7, 2023 by Dissent

Notices of breaches involving two school breaches showed up today in DataBreaches’ searches:

Aspire Public Schools in California submitted notifications to at least two state attorneys general. According to its notification, Aspire learned that an unauthorized party gained access to one Aspire email account at various times between
February 2022 and August 2022. There was no evidence that the contents of the email account were actually viewed, but personal information was in the account. An undisclosed number of people have been notified. You can read the template notification on the Montana Attorney General’s website.

Rochester Public Schools in Minnesota has posted a notice on their website:

Important Technology Update

April 7, 2023, 6 a.m.

Yesterday, Rochester Public Schools discovered irregular activity on its network. RPS Technology staff responded immediately and shut down district-wide internet connection to review and address the issue.

RPS Technology staff are working with third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct a detailed examination of RPS systems and data. As we undergo this review, students will not be able to access their RPS Google accounts. Staff will be unable to access their RPS Google accounts beginning later this morning. Please note that phones at school district buildings are also currently not operating.

We will provide an update here on our website, and via our Skylert messaging system when we have more information, no later than Sunday evening.
