Breach affecting University of Pittsburgh Medical Center employees bigger than initially reported

Adam Brandolph reports that a breach involving University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) employees is bigger than initially reported:

As many as 322 UPMC employees — 300 more than initially reported — have been affected by a data breach and identity theft scheme, the hospital system said on Thursday.

Authorities said the breach allowed someone to use the employees’ personal information to electronically file fraudulent income tax returns.

A lawsuit had already been filed that seemed to assume the breach was at UPMC. As of today, UPMC does not seem to have publicly confirmed that this was their breach, but they are responding as if it is theirs – offering employees free credit monitoring services and other supports.
