Ca: Some Rogers Communications’ customer data stolen by former contractor’s employee

Morgan Modjeski reports that Rogers Communications is notifying 226 customers that a former employee of a contractor had stolen their personal information.

Rogers reportedly only learned of the breach when York Regional Police notified them that in the course of an investigation, they had found customers’ telephone numbers, full names, credit card information and even Social Insurance numbers on the computer of “an ex-employee who worked for a former Rogers contractor.” Neither the former employee nor the former contractor have been named.

“That individual had been keeping personal information about some of our customers that dates back to 2012 and 2013,” Rogers spokesman Aaron Lazarus said.

Of note, a Rogers spokesperson said it’s Rogers’ understanding the information was collected by photographing computer screens where the personal information was displayed.  Such methods make data theft very hard to detect.
