Details on the Weatherford ISD data breach

Posted on April 8, 2022 by Dissent

DataBreaches.net has received the following statement from Charlotte LaGrone, Executive Director of Communications for Weatherford ISD, concerning the breach DataBreaches.net reported yesterday:

Weatherford ISD Statement on Data Breach

The confidentiality, privacy, and security of information in our care is one of our highest priorities. Despite multiple layers of processes and procedures to prevent a data breach, the district is now one of a growing number of public and private organizations experiencing cyberattacks.

On February 9, 2022, Weatherford ISD was the victim of an email spoofing attack by an individual pretending to be a District level employee. The email included a request for all Weatherford ISD employees’ W-2 information for 2021. The fraudulent nature of this email request was discovered on March 29, 2022. Weatherford ISD employees were notified of this data breach on March 29, 2022.

Weatherford ISD administrators are working tirelessly to investigate and mitigate the impact of this spoofing attack. Federal, state and local law enforcement authorities were immediately contacted once we learned of this data breach. These agencies are assisting Weatherford ISD in the investigation of this data breach. Additionally, we have reported the data breach to all required agencies including the IRS, SSA, FBI, Office of the Attorney General, and TEA.

The District is committed to providing resources and support to assist our employees impacted by this security breach.
