Doctor's laptop + unattended car = you can write the news story…

We could all write the news report by now as it’s same old, same old. Erik Rosales reports:

A Fresno doctor is offering a $500.00 reward for the save return of a stolen computer.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Gloria Traje-Quitoriano has helped heal sick kids in the area.

Her office is in downtown Fresno.

But it was in northeast Fresno that someone broke into her husband’s car, and stole one of her work computers full of patient information.

Dr. Gloria Traje-Quitoriano says, “We don’t care about the computer, we care about the file.”

Files that contain personal patient information like names, home addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and even social security numbers.

I wonder whether advertising a reward for the laptop is such a good idea, though. It alerts the thief that there’s a lot of data on there that could be used for ID theft.

If your laptop with PII/PHI was stolen, would you post a reward?

And of course, insert the obligatory “why weren’t the data or hard drive encrypted?” and “why was the device left in an unattended car?” somewhere in your news coverage.
