FL: Error Puts Private College Data Online

Until Friday, the names, addresses, Social Security and driver’s license numbers of hundreds of people associated with Edward Waters College were accessible to anyone doing a Google or Yahoo search.

The college was not aware of the situation until contacted by Channel 4.

A statement posted on the college’s web site says:

On Friday, May 14, 2010 at 2:30 pm, the administration of Edward Waters College was made aware that an isolated number of its electronic files were subject to public viewing. By 4:00 pm, corrective action was taken and all files in question were secured.

The College regrets this unfortunate incident and in keeping with best practices, has already begun to notify all parties impacted. While the College has always taken measures to safeguard its data, a full review of its technology security systems, policies, and procedures has been launched to prevent unauthorized and unintended access.
