GA: Fulton County signs consent order to resolve improper disposal of records case
In a follow-up to a breach first reported in April 2007, the Associated Press reports that Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections officials have signed a consent order admitting they unlawfully disposed of 30 boxes of voter documents in 2007. The boxes, which were found outside Atlanta Technical College, contained approximately 75,000 voter registration cards and 24,000 precinct cards. As reported in 2007, the voter registration cards contained voters’ full name, address and complete Social Security Number; many of the cards were for currently active voters.
The consent order requires semiannual audits, but also imposed a $20,000 civil penalty and requires them to pay another $100,000 into a fund to pay for independent audits.
A press release issued by Secretary of State Karen Handel described the election board’s actions as “reckless:”
There does not seem to be any statement on the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections web site about the consent order as of the time of this publication.
