Hospital board mum on possible privacy violations

Tim Lockette reports:

Officials at Regional Medical Center [in Anniston, Alabama] have completed their first look into possible violations of patient privacy at the hospital. But so far, the results of that investigation are, well, private.

“This is a peer review document, and as such it is not something we can release to the public,” said William Stewart, legal counsel for the hospital.

The executive committee of the hospital’s board of directors met Monday to hear a report on a February incident in which a list of patients’ names was faxed outside the hospital.

Sources close to the hospital have told The Star that the fax contained the names of students injured in a bus accident and that the fax was sent to a local law firm specializing in personal liability. The fax may have been a violation of federal law governing patient privacy.
