NYS Data breaches exposed personal information of 9.2M New Yorkers in 2017

WHEC reports:

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was in Rochester Thursday to release a new report on data breaches impacting New Yorkers.

The attorney general released “Information Exposed: 2017 Data Breaches in New York State,” documenting the record number of data breach notices filed with his office in 2017.

In 2017, companies and other entities reported 1,583 data breaches to the attorney general’s office, exposing the personal information of 9.2 million New Yorkers – quadruple the number of New Yorkers impacted in 2016.

Read more on WHEC.  Keep in mind that NYS law excludes HIPAA-covered entities from having to report to the state. The proposed SHIELD law would remedy that.
