Patients' Personal Information May Have Been Hacked reports that some people notified of the UNC Chapel Hill breach had no idea that their data had been shared and had not consented to it:

Bev Olson, who lives in Forsyth County, said her information was shared with UNC without her knowledge after she had a mammography performed.

“I think there’s been a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) violation because I never signed a release to have my information shared with six other states,” Olson said. “They have used my personal information when I don’t feel like they needed to. They were sloppy and cavalier in how they handled it. I didn’t know I was part of a research study.”

Olson said along with her Social Security number, her date of birth, health insurance status and other medical information were shared with the registry.
