Rash of Breaches Coincides With Health Privacy & Security Week

April 13 through 19 was Health Information Privacy and Security Week.

Started five years ago by the American Health Information Management Association, the week’s intent is to schedule events and publicity to raise public and professional awareness of issues related to the privacy and security of patient health information.

The week this year saw a flurry of security breaches, a rare conviction in a medical record snooping case and the emergence of some fundamental questions about the relationship between commercial interests and digital medical records — all events that pointed relentless media spotlights on privacy and security concerns.

Mission accomplished, but not necessarily as planned.
