Student privacy breached in Victoria Education Department blunder

Another breach involving sensitive information. Sophie Smith reports:

The Victorian Education Department has said it is “deeply sorry” for mistakenly publishing private and sensitive information about homeschooled children on its website.

Confidential information contained in submissions made to the department was published when the documents were uploaded without redactions on Friday.

Details that identified students who suffered medical conditions and personal traumas such as school bullying were made public as were the contact details of some parents.

The entries were available online for 24 hours and in some instances reportedly disclosed how cases of self-harm, bullying and a lack of speciality services had seen parents turn to homeschooling.
