TX: Ex-city workers sentenced for ID thefts

There’s a follow-up to a breach reported previously on this blog. Guillermo Contreras reports:

A San Antonio couple who worked for the city was sentenced Thursday for using stolen Social Security information to buy a boat, jewelry and several vehicles, including two motorcycles, two Cadillacs and a $43,000 Corvette.

U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia gave Mary Mercy Lopez, 49, five months in jail, five months of house arrest and two years of federal supervision because she violated her position of trust as a city employee.

The judge gave her partner, David Edward Reyes, 48, five years of probation with six months of it under home confinement.

The pair admitted that Lopez stole some of the Social Security numbers from patients at a Metropolitan Health District clinic on McCullough Avenue, where Lopez worked through a temp agency as an administrative assistant for a tuberculosis program, according to plea paperwork.
