TX: Hacker gained access to personal data of all students, employees in Houston Independent School District

Posted on December 2, 2010 by Dissent

Houston Independent School District (HISD)  announced an overhaul of their computer network security system Thursday after a hacker gained access to the private data of all students, employees and some vendors dating back 10 years.

District officials said the first sign of the security breach was noted by HISD tech workers on October 24, 2010.

A criminal investigation—led by HISD police with assistance from the FBI, the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory and IBM—was immediately launched, and investigators confirmed that the breach had, in fact, occurred shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday, HISD officials said.

Investigators said they also confirmed that the hacker viewed the personal data of one HISD student.

Officials said there was no evidence that the private data of any other students, employees or vendors was viewed by an unauthorized user, but the investigation was ongoing.
