UK: Norwich college dumps students’ files in skip

Ben Woods reports:

Piles of documents revealing student names, photographs, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and some files exposing sensitive medical information, were found in bin bags at City College.

An investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found the college on Ipswich Road had adequate procedures and policies for dealing with personal information, but these did not extend to the collection, storage and disposal of confidential waste.

The incident, reported to the ICO in February this year, was the second time City College had thrown away files in this way.

The investigation has led Richard Palmer, Principal of Norwich City College of Further and Higher Education, to sign an undertaking ensuring that a formal policy around handling confidential waste will be in place by May 1 2011.

The undertaking indicates that the two instances of improper disposal were reported to the ICO on February 11.
