UK: Police probe after confidential medical records found dumped in Coventry

Would you want your records exposed this way? Even if you’re not worried about identity theft or employment discrimination, would you want others knowing such sensitive information>? Martin Bagot reports:

Police are investigating after confidential medical records were found by a member of the public in Coventry. He reported finding the highly sensitive documents dumped in a bin near the entrance of Coventry’s University Hospital.

The hospital and police have both launched inquiries into what happened.

The full medical records of a patient from the Cheylesmore area have since been handed in to police, who are also looking in to the incident.

The files contain information about a man in his 40s going back decades.

The documents included details of a number of intimate operations and medical conditions, including a vasectomy.

University Hospital has issued a full apology to the patient concerned.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust released a statement saying it believes the removal of the confidential records from the hospital was “a deliberate act”.
