(update) BCBS-WNY laptop also had data on BS-NENY members

WNYT reports:

A missing laptop puts some BlueCross BlueShield customers at risk for identity theft in New York State.

The company confirms the laptop went missing in late fall with information on up to 40,000 members.

This affects BlueCross BlueShield of Northeastern New York and BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York.

The company claims if you are at risk, you should have received a letter saying so.

The notification letter to affected members [pdf] says, in part:

As part of the on-going investigation, as well as the extensive effort to locate the missing laptop, we have thoroughly reviewed prior usage to determine if it had any individually identifiable health information.
We concluded that it was possible the laptop’s hard drive may have contained one or more of the
following pieces of member information:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security Number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Employer group name
