Update: Laptop holding PERA data stolen from auditor’s pickup at hotel lot

We should have known or at least guessed.

Trip Jennings provides additional background on the Public Employees Retirement Association of New Mexico breach reported previously on this blog.

Parked at a Clovis Comfort Inn & Suites, the 2008 white Ford F350 pickup must have seemed an inviting target.

Inside the truck’s cab were two laptop computers and an iPod. The items were left unattended for 8 1/2 hours, from 8 p.m. June 12 to 4:30 a.m. June 13, according to a June 13 Clovis Police Department report.

That was more than enough time for a thief to break the truck’s passenger window and make off with the computers and iPod.

Jennings also reports the name of the firm involved in the loss:

At the time of its theft, the Dell laptop was in the possession of Robert Peixotto, a 28-year-old auditor at Atkinson & Co., according to the Clovis police report. PERA said last week that Atkinson is an Albuquerque accounting firm hired to perform an annual audit of the state agency. The stolen laptop possibly containing PERA information was owned by the Atkinson firm, the report said.
